Gearbox fluid provides lubrication for the sets of bearings, shafts and gears located in the different types of gearboxes which operate under high stress and heat.
Draining old fluid in accordance with manufacturer recommendations is the only way to remove foreign particles cleaned from internal parts and held in suspension. As the additives are “consumed” in the old fluid the lubricants lose their ability to clean, cool and lubricate. Fluid replacement can extend the life of the internal parts, allowing the gears to flow more easily and freely. The gearbox service includes:
- Removal and inspection of the fill plug and the drain plug.
- Remove the old gear oil.
- Reinstall the drain plug.
- Fill gearbox with proper top-quality gear lubricant.
- Reinstall fill plug.
Differential and Gearbox

The differential is an assembly of gears that provides power to the axles while still allowing the wheels to turn at different speeds. This speed variability between wheels allows the vehicle to turn corners without causing damage to the gears or causing the wheels to skid.
Differentials, transfer cases, manual transmissions, and transaxles are commonly referred to as "gearboxes". Gearboxes require lubricants to reduce friction between gears, shafts and synchronizers and maintain proper operating temperature. Each gearbox has a specific requirement for the lubricating fluid used. Like engine oil, gear oil has additives that deteriorate and need to be changed at regular intervals.
- Should be replaced following the manufacturer's recommended mileage interval.
